Cuckoo-roller (Leptosomus discolor) with leaf-tailed gecko (Uroplatus sp) MONOSPECIFIC FAMILY
Mantadia National Park. MADAGASCAR
These are large birds (50cm) with a distinctive, rather heavy silhouette and massive head with eyes that seem set far back. Male and female have different plumage. They are usually seen in pairs or groups of 3 - 8. They prefer the upper stratum of the forest. They feed on Invertebrates - large insects and vertebrates such as chameleons and Uroplatus or Leaf-tailed geckos.
STATUS: Fairly common throughout their range.
DISTRIBUTION: This family is only found in Madagascar and the Comoros. They are found in primary and secondary forests from sea level to 2,000m.
