While in India during the winter they feed on crops such as large gram and wheat but also feed on shoots, insects and small reptiles. Flocks rest on sandbanks of rivers or margins of jheels during midday heat.
These birds spend their summers breeding in Mongolia, S Europe, N Africa and N & C Asia and migrate south for the winters to Pakistan, Assam, Bangladesh and Andhra Pradesh in India.
