Buffalo herd

Buffalo (Syncerus caffer) herd is still in a tight group after sleeping this way and they will stay grouped until mid morning in the hopes that it will then be too hot for the lions to follow and hunt them.
Duba Plains area. Okavango Delta. BOTSWANA. Southern Africa.
THIS HERD AND ITS LION INTERACTION HAS BEEN THE SUBJECT OF A NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC DOCUMENTARY FILMED BY DEREK AND BEVERLEY JOUBERT.
HABITAT: Open plains where they eat coarse grass - in doing so expose the more tender grass and shoots for the many animals that find the old grass unpalatable. When not feeding they tend to group tightly in wooded areas with the young in the center to protect themselves againt predators.
They usually occur in large herds and are under constant stress with lions and hyaena stalking and hunting them on a regular basis.
Both sexes have horns. Males horns more massive. Males are also larger and darker in color. They weigh between F: 550kg and M 600-1000kg's with a should height of 140 cm.
They are predatored on by lions, spotted hyaena and large crocodiles.
