Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas agassisi)
Central Isles
GALAPAGOS, ECUADOR. South America
These turtles are commonly seen around the islands. This is the only species resident in the islands although marked individuals have been seen breeding on the mainland of Ecuador. They feed mainly on seaweeds. They can spend long periods of time submerged, especially when they are inactive. They can often be found sleeping on shallow sandy bottoms and rocky underwater ledges. They are not completely aquatic and must come ashore to breed. They have also been recorded as coming ashore to bask.
