  • Grabbing scarves event at the Horse Racing Festival or 'Heavenly Steed Festival' which takes place on the 5th and 6th days of the fifth lunar month. They run around the track once and on both straight sections there are scarves laid out on the ground.  The winner is the rider who collects the most scarves in the shortest time. Zhongdian. Horse traders come from distant villages to compete and trade. The horses are decorated with fine Tibetan carpet saddle blankets and silk scarves tied on their tails, manes and bridles.  Families camp out in their traditional tents in the horse racing grounds. Large picnics are laid out and there is a lively sense of celebration as competing riders test their equestrian skills and try to win honour for their home villages. There are over 100,000 Tibetans in China and they are mostly concentrated in Deqin with smaller communities in Lijiang, Yongsheng, Gongshan and Ninglang.
