• Hani child and domesticated water buffalo used for ploughing the rice paddies. Hani Ethnic minority people. Yuanyang, Honghe Prefecture, Yunnan Province. CHINA
Hani are found in the following Prefectures: Simao, Lincang, Xishuangbanna, Yuxi, Honghe, Baoshan, Dehong, Chuxiong and Lijiang.
This is the dominant ethnic group in the highlands of Ailaoshan and the people who built most of the terraces. They belong to the Tibeto-Burman language group. Their two-story houses are built with mud brick and an added thatched shed onto the flat roof forms a distinct shape - called Mushroom houses. Their villages are built above the terraces. Each village selects a man to be the Guardian of Channels, who is in charge of checking the flow of the main irrigation channel, cleaning it of debris and overseeing the post-harvest repairs. He also determines the amount of water to be allocated for other areas and for all members of the community. To guarantee that every family in the village receives a fair share of available water thus demands a high degree of cooperation among its residents. This outlook has instilled a stong sense of solidarity among the Hani and sharing has influenced their notion of hospitality. Their ethnic pride is visible in the preference the women have for donning their traditional costume. The woman wear indigo and black trousers and jackets with silver coin buttons. They wear head bands decorated with coins and yarn hanging down the back. The children up until the age of 6 years wear very decorated outfits and their hats are strewn with coins and chains.

 • Woman carrying water up steps of the wall surrounding Mehrangarh Fort of Jodhpur. Rajasthan, INDIA
This is one of the most impressive fortresses in rajasthan. Perched on top of a rocky cliff 400 feet above the plain, it has a commanding view of the surrounding area. The fort itself is divided broadly into 3 areas: the outer court, with its old stables and kitchens, the Durbar hall, reception rooms and maharajas palaces and finally the zenana, or queen's palaces. The palace complex constructed around a series of interconnecting courtyards and adorned with breathtaking carved sandstone filigree was first built in 1459 and added to over the centuries.
The Kingdom of Jodhpur was established in the 12th century but in the 15th century the fort and city walls were constructed and they still stand today. Jodhpur is the second largest city in Rajasthan with a population of 1.3 million. Jodhpur may be called the 'Blue City' from the characteristic pale indigo colour of its traditional homes. Originally the color signified the home of the Jodhpuri Brahmin but the copper sulphate in the paint seems to ward off termites and mosquitos so many people then followed the traditional of painting their homes blue. The very narrow streets are filled with colourful bazaars where merchants are selling their wares.

 • Greater or Caribbean Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) Bachas Beach, north Santa Cruz Island,Galapagos Islands
ECUADOR, South America
Quietly filtering the brackish waters, these birds spread between the major lagoon of the archipelago, particularly those on Floreana, Isabela, Rabida, Santiago, Santa Cruz and Bainbridge Rocks. They seem to undertake seasonal migrations from lagoon to lagoon, on an individual basis, according to local food abundance. Inside their bills are a series of plates which serve to strain tiny invertebrate food organisms from the water and mud. The tongue acts as a piston, drawing water in through the front of the bill and then forcing it out of the sides past the plates. They often patter their feet in the mud to disturb food, but may also feed in deep water - they can swim very well if necessary. The pink color comes from carotenoid pigments in their diet.

 • Rice terraces of the Ailao Mountains between the Red River and Vietnam. Honghe Prefecture, Yuanyang. Yunnan Province. CHINA
These terraces are mottled with villages all the way up the slopes, separated by little clumps of forest and great swaths of terraced fields. They are cut into every contour of the slopes, at angles up to 70 degrees and are the most ancient and the most impressive in the entire region. Most are irrigated and filled with water all year round. They are mostly used to only grow rice and so in the dry months of winter they are empty of crops. Some of the terraces have been producing rice for over a thousand consecutive years. In Ailaoshan the water from high mountain springs and creeks is channeled in ditches that are directed to run throughout the farming area. Divider stones and bamboo tubes divert part of the water from the main irrigation channel to individual terraces, from these dropping through notches in the terrace walls to feed those below and so on all the way to the bottom.
These terraces were built by Hani, Yi and Dai Ethnic minority peoples.

 • Rajusthani pastoralist fetching water and preparing for the day at the Pushkar camel and livestock fair which takes place in the Hindu month of Kartik (October / November) ten days after Diwali (Festival of Lights). Pushkar has always been the the region's main market for herdsman and farmers buying and selling camels, horses, indigenous breeds of cattle and even elephants. Over the years this annual trading event has increased in volume to become one of the largest in Asia. Temporary tents and campsites suddenly appear to accomodate the thousands of pilgrims, villagers and tourists. Entertainers and contests abound and a festive funfair atmosphere prevails over Pushkar during the Mela's 2 week duration. Thousands of men come first with their camels, horses and cattle and camp on the dunes to transact business. 3 days before the full moon the women arrive beautifully attired. The town of Pushkar is one of the holiest centers of Hinduism and houses one of the few Brahma Temples in India. It is one of the 5 essential pilgrimage centers which a Hindu must visit in his lifetime along with Badrinath, Puri, Rameshwaram and Dwarka. • Baobab (Adansonia za) and rainbow. Berenty Reserve, Southern MADAGASCAR
Flowers between November and June
HABITAT & DISTRIBUTION: West of Fort Dauphin up to Analalava. Prefers calcareous soils and is the only species in the spiny forest on limestone of the Mahafaly Plateau in the deep south.
ENDEMIC TO MADAGASCAR
There are eight baobab species in the world. 6 are endemic to Madagascar, one from Africa and one from Australia. Baobabs probably evolved in Madagascar after Gondwanaland split and the Africa and Australian species must have arisen from colonising fruits floating across the Indian Ocean. In Madagascar the 6 species have evolved to fit their own niche within the dry forest zones. The 7th (African) species was introduced by Arab traders and is planted in some of the town in the north west. They are dryland plants and are 'drought survivors' and are able to store water from a sporadic downpour very efficiently within the soft, porous wood of their big, fat trunks. They are quite fire resistant.
